Although a part of Malta, Gozo prides itself on its
independence and cultural significance. Though for a brief
period following Napoleon's conquest of Malta, Gozo was
declared an autonomous region, it has historically, and is
today, governed by Malta, albeit with its own local government
and ministry.
The differences between Gozo and Malta are also reflected in
the geography and atmosphere. Although a large island
about the third the size of Malta, the small
population of Gozo makes the island less crowded and the
landscape more peaceful and open.
Getting to Gozo
Gozo is easily and affordably reachable from Malta by
regular passenger and car ferries between the port of Mġarr on
Gozo and Ċirkewwa on Malta. The ferries travel between Gozo and
Malta roughly every 45 minutes during the summer season and
nearly as frequently during the winter months.
